The first aluminium bridge deck was built in Pittsburgh in 1933, while the first all aluminium bridge was constructed near Massena, New York in 1946. Nine North American bridges were built between 1946 and 1963; eight still exist.

In Europe the first aluminium bridge dates from 1949, Sutherland (UK) and another 35 were built between 1949 and 1985, most of them between 1950 and 1970.

In the Netherlands the first aluminium bridge was installed in Amsterdam in 1955 and another one in Anna Paulowna polder in 1961. Also two bridge decks were replaced by aluminium decks, one in Amsterdam in1958 and one in Rotterdam in 1985.
